Research Achievements
a. Flora and Fungi Bio-inventory Surveys
Already, the Institute has completed bio-inventories of vascular plants and fungi in counties and cities on whole island and bio-inventories of bryophytes in central regions. Researchers have collected over 50,000 records and made a total of 29,020 plant specimens. In addition, researchers have published papers on six new species and 49 new records of fungi, and 41 new records of vascular plant in Taiwan..
b. Rare and Endemic Plant Restoration
ESRI has compiled basic information for Taiwan`s rare and endangered plants, including Rhododendron kanehirae Wilson, Hygrophila pogonocalyx Hayata, Nymphoides lungtanensis S. P. Li, T. H. Hsieh & C. C. Lin, Cephalotaxus wilsonianaHayata, Podocarpus nakaii Hayata, and other species. Researchers have also drawn up restoration projects for Rhododendron kanehirae Wilson and Hygrophila pogonocalyx Hayata and established taskforces responsible for the work of rehabilitating these species.
c. Non-native Plant Investigation and Research
Regrding non-native, invasive plants, the Institute has established a list of over 400 introduced/naturalized plant species in Taiwan and has undertaken studies of the spread and damage of the Siam weed ( Chromolaena odorata (L.) R. M. King & H. Rob.), the Mile-a-minute weed ( Mikania micrantha H. B. K.) and the Common parthenium ( Parthenium hysterophorus L.). Of these, the Mile-a-minute weed has already spread over a largest area, reaching over 40,000 hectares, mostly in central and southern Taiwan. Siam weed is most prevalent in south Taiwan, while Common parthenium has only been found in coastal cities and counties in western and southern Taiwan. Besides, ESRI researchers have used the dense growth of native aquatic plants to effectively prevent the spread of the introduced species Rice cutgrass ( Leersia hexandra Sw.).
d. Website and Database Creation
ESRI has established two websites related to Taiwan`s wild plant inventories and specimen collecton, as follows:
i. Taiwan Wild Plant Database
https://tbd.tbn.org.tw/plant106/index.aspx
As of December 2022, this website contained basic information on 9,678 species of plant, 96,730 inventory records and 43,060 specimens.
ii.Herbarium of Endemic Species Research Institute, Taiwan (TAIE)
https://taie.tbn.org.tw/
This website was established as a platform letting people can easily examine the specimens online. Users can get the collection information of specimen they searched, and also download its high-resolution picture. If the determined taxon name on sheet is wrong, users can provide their feedback online and we will recheck the determination and make a correction.
